Meet Megan, a young adult and Rowan County native, who has been riding at Wings of Eagles Ranch since 2002. Megan has lived most of her life with multiple physical disabilities.
In 2015, she was finally diagnosed with Riboflavin Transporter Deficiency (RTD) Type 2, a rare metabolic disorder. Her condition affects her hearing, vision, balance, and upper body strength. Nevertheless, Megan leads a full life and enjoys many activities, from horseback riding and outdoor activities to reading and writing. She has very supportive parents and a sister, whom she loves. A graduate of Catawba College and an active church member, she blogs about Christian faith, often incorporating her love of animals and experiences with disability to make her points. Her involvement with The Ranch has impacted her life in many ways. Riding helps her maintain overall strength and train her body to move in a more centered way. Her desire to ride well also motivates her to keep up her physical therapy outside the saddle, and to learn more about how the human body works. On another level, the ranch activities challenge her to keep testing her limits and striving for excellence, even when it's hard. At the same time, The Ranch is a safe place where she can become good at something she loves in an inclusive and nourishing environment, while building relationships with people and horses alike. The Ranch's founder and director, Christine Cronin, is one of Megan's role models. Chris has been a patient teacher, challenging yet supportive, as well as a faithful friend. Megan looks up to her as an example of leadership and visionary faith. Megan's goals for her riding are to be able to ride well and independently, have strong rapport with her horse - and have fun! |
