by Megan Bean We are like horses in our relationship with God. Until we get to know Him, we naturally tried to avoid Him by running away or fighting back. That is our nature. We do it naturally even if we wouldn’t mind making friends (of course, we don’t know that because it never crossed our wild minds, and we are afraid of the unknown and flee from it).
So God has to make the first approach. The first thing He did was buy us from the old evil owner whose main concern was to make us even wilder. Now, imagine how much that cost. He paid all that for a bunch of wild time- and money-consuming things that might never agree to be tamed. He did it because He loved us that much.
Then He began pouring out blessings on us. He spent 24/7 with us, loving us and spending time with us. He started training us, teaching us everything we need to know to complete the tasks He wants us to do.
It takes a long time to befriend a horse and earn its trust. Same for us. We revel frequently, doubt constantly, make mistakes, get ourselves out of the ribbons…but God has patience and still believes in us and is ready to comfort us. Such love has never been, is not, and never will be.
For many of God’s herd, this love was observed with suspicion and disdain. They refused the offer of friendship, snorted at kindness, kicked at a gentle hand, and fled at God’s voice. They preferred to stay with their own group and play all day. Some merely performed out of duty or fear. Some were show-offs.
But the leftovers experienced their own special days when all of a sudden, something seemed to click. They and their Master seemed to melt together and become one. They were never the same.
And when the final race comes, they will run. And if they are true, if they have the heart, they will win.
Then they will be rewarded. While the whole world watches, they will prance together alongside their Master as they ascend to their glory.
